JoSAA 2026 counselling registration opens on Tuesday, 2 June 2026 at 17:00 IST on josaa.nic.in — just hours after the JEE Advanced 2026 result is declared by IIT Roorkee at 10:00 IST the same morning. JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the single point of seat allotment for 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs and 48 GFTIs — together about 62,853 engineering seats across 128 institutes. Miss the window or fumble the choice list, and the next round won’t wait. This step-by-step guide explains every stage.
JoSAA 2026 — Quick Schedule Overview
- JEE Advanced 2026 result: 1 June, 10:00 IST — jeeadv.ac.in
- JoSAA registration + choice filling opens: 2 June, 17:00 IST
- 2 mock seat allocations: first half of June 2026 (tentative)
- Round 1 seat allotment: mid-June 2026
- Total rounds: 6 rounds, running through July 2026
- CSAB special rounds: after JoSAA ends, on csab.nic.in, for vacant NIT-system seats
Round-wise dates for 2026 will be published on josaa.nic.in/schedule/ on registration day. Bookmark and check daily.
Step 1 — Registration on josaa.nic.in
Use your JEE Main 2026 application number and password — JoSAA pulls Advanced rank automatically once you log in. Fill personal details, category certificate details (if any), bank details (for refund), and contact information. Upload nothing at this stage — document verification happens later.
Step 2 — Choice Filling (The Most Important Step)
This is where most students lose seats. The rules:
- You can add any number of choices — institute + branch combinations — in order of preference.
- Order matters. JoSAA evaluates top-down: if you put IIT-Bombay CSE as choice #1 and your rank qualifies, you are allotted that seat and lower choices are ignored.
- You must lock your choices before the deadline (usually 9-10 days from registration opening). If you don’t lock, the last auto-save is locked for you.
- Mock allocations (twice during the choice-filling window) tell you which choice would be allotted at that moment. Use them to refine the order.
Step 3 — Seat Allotment & the Float / Slide / Freeze Decision
After each round, you log in and see one of three outcomes:
- Allotted a seat: Choose Freeze (keep this seat, exit counselling), Slide (try for a better branch within this institute in next round), or Float (try for a better choice across all institutes).
- Not allotted (no qualifying choice met): Stay in next round automatically.
- Allotted but withdraw: Possible before withdrawal deadline of each round.
Most counsellors recommend Float in early rounds (maximum upward mobility) and switching to Freeze by round 3-4 if you’re satisfied.
Step 4 — Seat Acceptance Fee
For JoSAA 2025 (2026 figures will be confirmed on josaa.nic.in):
- OPEN / GEN-EWS / OBC-NCL: Rs 35,000
- SC / ST / PwD: Rs 17,500
Fee is paid online during seat acceptance. This is adjusted against your institute tuition fee, refunded if you withdraw before deadline, or forfeited if you abandon counselling.
Step 5 — Document Verification & Reporting
After seat acceptance, you upload documents to your “Reporting Centre” (assigned automatically by JoSAA). Mandatory documents:
- JoSAA seat allotment letter
- JEE Advanced & JEE Main 2026 scorecards
- Class 10 mark sheet & passing certificate (for date of birth)
- Class 12 mark sheet & passing certificate
- Category certificate (OBC-NCL / SC / ST / GEN-EWS) issued in the prescribed format and date
- PwD certificate (if applicable) issued by a notified authority
- Photo ID (Aadhaar / passport / voter ID)
- Recent passport-size photographs (3-4 copies)
- Medical certificate (institute-specific)
The full document list is on josaa.nic.in under “Business Rules”.
Seat Matrix — 2025 Reference (2026 numbers awaited)
| Institute Type | 2025 Seats | Entrance Used |
|---|---|---|
| 23 IITs | ~18,160 | JEE Advanced 2026 |
| 31 NITs | ~24,525 | JEE Main 2026 |
| 26 IIITs | ~9,940 | JEE Main 2026 |
| 48 GFTIs | ~10,228 | JEE Main 2026 |
| Total | ~62,853 | 128 institutes |
Common Mistakes That Cost Students Their Seat
- Putting only 5-10 choices. Always fill 60-100+ choices — later choices act as safety nets if early rounds don’t allot.
- Ignoring branch-vs-institute preference. Decide early: are you a “brand-of-institute” person (any branch at IIT-B) or a “branch-first” person (CSE wherever you land)?
- Not reading the OR-CR (Opening Rank — Closing Rank) data from JoSAA 2024 & 2025, available on josaa.nic.in/or-cr/. This tells you the realistic rank-window for each branch-institute combo.
- Late seat acceptance. Round deadlines are tight (usually 48-72 hours). Miss one and you exit JoSAA permanently.
- Submitting wrong category certificate format. Category certificates must be on the JoSAA-prescribed template — the wrong format causes rejection at document verification.
What If JoSAA Doesn’t Give You a Seat?
CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) runs csab.nic.in for two special rounds after JoSAA closes — these fill vacant NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats. State-level counselling (e.g. Bihar BCECE, UP, MP, MH-CET) also uses JEE Main 2026 rank and runs in parallel.

FAQs
Q1. When exactly does JoSAA 2026 registration open?
Tuesday, 2 June 2026 at 17:00 IST on josaa.nic.in — the same day the JEE Advanced result is released.
Q2. Do I need to clear JEE Advanced to register for JoSAA?
No. Anyone who has a valid JEE Main 2026 rank can register. JEE Advanced qualifiers get IIT seats; non-Advanced candidates compete for NIT, IIIT & GFTI seats on Main rank.
Q3. How many choices should I fill?
As many as you genuinely would accept. Most counsellors suggest 60-100+ choices across IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs — ordered strictly by your true preference.
Q4. Can I withdraw from JoSAA after accepting a seat?
Yes, before the withdrawal deadline of the current round. Your seat-acceptance fee is refunded (minus a small processing charge per JoSAA Business Rules).
Q5. What is the difference between Float, Slide, and Freeze?
Freeze: Keep current seat, exit. Slide: Stay in same institute, try for a better branch. Float: Try for a better choice across any institute in your filled list. Pick Float in early rounds for maximum upward mobility.
