JoSAA 2026 Counselling Starts June 2 at josaa.nic.in: Complete Guide to Choice Filling, Freeze/Float/Slide & Mock Allotments

Student at laptop reviewing engineering college choice list for JoSAA 2026 counselling

JoSAA 2026 counselling — the single gateway to seats in 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 26 IIITs and 40+ GFTIs — opens on 2 June 2026 at 17:00 IST on the official portal josaa.nic.in. With JEE Advanced 2026 result landing one day earlier (1 June, 10:00 IST on jeeadv.ac.in), candidates have less than 24 hours to plan their choice list before registration starts. This guide breaks down the entire JoSAA 2026 process — registration → choice filling → mock allotments → Freeze/Float/Slide → six rounds of seat allotment — using only information from official NIC / IIT sources.

Who Can Register for JoSAA 2026?

You are eligible to register on josaa.nic.in if you have either of the following:

  • A valid rank in JEE Main 2026 (from the National Testing Agency at jeemain.nta.nic.in) — required for seats in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs.
  • A valid rank in JEE Advanced 2026 — required for IIT seats. IIT candidates almost always also have a Main rank, so they can be considered for NIT+ system seats simultaneously through the same JoSAA registration.

You do not register twice. A single JoSAA registration covers all 120+ institutes.

Step 1 — Registration on josaa.nic.in

  1. Open josaa.nic.in from 17:00 IST on 2 June 2026. Click “Candidate Registration“.
  2. Log in with your JEE Main 2026 application number + password. JEE Advanced rank, if any, is auto-fetched.
  3. Verify personal, category, PwD, nationality and contact details on the dashboard. Errors here cascade into every later step.
  4. Submit the JoSAA registration. You do not need to re-enter category certificates at this stage — they will be verified physically (or via online uploads) only after seat allotment.

Step 2 — Choice Filling (The Single Most Important Step)

You can list any number of institute-academic-program combinations in order of preference. Most allotted candidates list 60–150 choices. The system will scan top-to-bottom and allot the highest-ranked choice that your rank can secure.

Choice-filling principles:

  • List dream choices at the top — even if you think your rank can’t reach them. Costs you nothing.
  • Anchor choices in the middle — programmes likely to be allotted given your rank and last year’s closing ranks on josaa.nic.in.
  • Safety net at the bottom — any seat you would still accept rather than withdraw. Without safety choices, an empty allotment forces you into CSAB special rounds or a drop year.
  • Cross-check 2025 opening / closing ranks for every institute-program combination on josaa.nic.in’s “Business Statistics” page. They are the closest-available proxy for 2026.
  • Use the 2 mock allotments to test your current list. You can rearrange / add / delete choices freely between mocks.

Mock Seat Allotment — How To Use It

JoSAA runs two mock seat allocations before Round 1, based on the choices you’ve filled at that moment. Mocks show:

  • Which institute-program your current list would allot you in Round 1.
  • Implicit “you didn’t list anything you can get” warning if no allotment appears.

The point of the mock is to force you to rethink choice order before locking. If Mock 1 allots you NIT Patna CSE but you actually wanted NIT Trichy ECE, you can re-shuffle your list to push NIT Trichy ECE above NIT Patna CSE. Then Mock 2 confirms whether your new order works.

Step 3 — Lock Your Choices

By the JoSAA-notified deadline (announced on josaa.nic.in after Mock 2), you must lock your final choice list. Until locking, the system processes your list as-is. After locking, no changes are possible across all six rounds.

If you forget to lock, JoSAA auto-locks at the cut-off — so even non-lockers participate, but with whatever choices were last saved.

Step 4 — Seat Allotment Rounds (6 + 2)

JoSAA conducts six rounds of seat allotment. After each round, you receive an allotted seat (if any) and must choose one of three “business preferences“:

Freeze, Float, Slide — Decoded

Option What it means When to choose
Freeze Accept this seat. Stop participating in future rounds. You are 100% happy with the institute + program. Locks in your seat, frees the system.
Slide Accept this seat, but stay in consideration for a higher-preference program in the same institute in next rounds. You like the institute but want a better branch within it (e.g. NIT Trichy ECE accepted but eyeing NIT Trichy CSE).
Float Accept this seat, but stay in consideration for any higher-preference institute (any branch above current) in next rounds. Maximum mobility. You want anything ranked higher on your locked list — even if it means moving city / institute.

Reject is also available — but it means you forfeit JoSAA entirely. Use only if you are certain you don’t want any seat from JoSAA.

Provisional Seat-Acceptance Fee (2025 reference)

To accept an allotted seat, candidates pay a provisional seat-acceptance fee (refundable / adjustable against institute fees later):

  • OPEN / EWS / OBC-NCL: Rs 35,000
  • SC / ST / PwD: Rs 17,500

(2026 fee will be officially notified on josaa.nic.in.) Payment is via SBI Multi-Option Payment System (e-Challan / net-banking / UPI) inside the candidate portal.

Step 5 — Document Verification + Reporting

After Round 1 onwards, allotted candidates must complete online document verification (or visit a reporting centre as instructed). Keep ready:

  • JoSAA seat allotment call letter (downloaded after each round)
  • JEE Advanced / JEE Main 2026 scorecard
  • Class 10 mark sheet + certificate (for date of birth proof)
  • Class 12 mark sheet + passing certificate
  • Category certificate (OBC-NCL / SC / ST / EWS) — must satisfy validity rules on josaa.nic.in
  • PwD certificate (if applicable)
  • Photo ID (Aadhaar / Passport / Voter ID)
  • Recent passport-size photographs
  • Provisional seat-acceptance fee payment receipt

What Happens After Round 6? (CSAB Special Rounds)

JoSAA closes after six rounds. If NITs, IIITs or GFTIs still have vacant seats, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts special rounds on csab.nic.in in August 2026. CSAB Special is a separate registration and a separate fee — IITs do not participate (IIT vacancies are absorbed internally by IIT-run withdrawal rounds).

What If You Want To Withdraw After a Round?

If your locked allotment lands and you change your mind, you can withdraw via the candidate portal within the JoSAA-specified window. Withdrawal refunds the seat-acceptance fee minus processing charges (typically Rs 1,000–2,000 per the JoSAA notification). After withdrawal, you are out of JoSAA — your only re-entry is via CSAB Special.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need to register on JoSAA if I only have a JEE Main rank (no Advanced)?

Yes. JoSAA registration is mandatory for any seat in NITs, IIITs or GFTIs — and JEE Main rank is the basis. Skipping JoSAA registration means you cannot be allotted any seat in these 100+ institutes through the national counselling.

2. Can I add or change choices after Round 1?

No. Once choices are locked before Round 1, they apply to all six rounds. You can only choose Freeze / Slide / Float on the seat you’ve been allotted in each round.

3. What is the difference between Slide and Float?

Slide = upgrade only within the same institute (higher-preference branch). Float = upgrade to any higher-preferred choice on your locked list, including a different institute. Float gives you the maximum chance of an upgrade; Slide locks you into one institute.

4. Is the JoSAA seat-acceptance fee refundable?

The fee is provisional and adjusted against your institute admission fee at the time of physical admission. If you withdraw within the JoSAA withdrawal window, the fee is refunded minus a small processing charge (announced on josaa.nic.in). If you don’t report on time, the fee is forfeited.

5. What if I miss the JoSAA registration deadline?

You lose the chance to be considered in JoSAA’s six rounds. Your only fall-back is CSAB Special Counselling on csab.nic.in (NIT/IIIT/GFTI vacancies only — no IIT seats). Many state-level counsellings (e.g. JAC Delhi, MHT-CET, WBJEE) also have parallel timelines.
